Product information "Jack Richeson Casein Paint 37ml Tube"

Casein (kay'seen) is a quick-drying, aqueous medium using a milk-based binding agent, and is one of the most durable mediums known to man.

Known for their versatility and array of capabilities, casein paints can be used to create a variety of effects from the rich opaques of oil to thin watercolor washes. Because casein has an exceptional integrity of color and always dries to a perfect matte finish, it is unexcelled for art reproduction.

Helpful Tips for Caseins

  • Choose a rigid, non-oily surface for your work
  • Establish correct drawing and value patterns with a thin underpainting
  • Dilute caseins with water to make washes & transparent glazes
  • Casein colors, especially reds, oranges, and yellows, tend to shift after drying
  • Lighten colors by adding more water or brighten them by adding powdered pigment
  • To correct an overly dark area, cover it with a more opaque layer of a lighter color
  • When working on a gessoed panel, correct any errors with an eraser or a 1:9 ammonia and water mixture

Jack Richeson Casein Emulsion
Casein Emulsion is the pure casein binder that is used to make casein paints. Because the emulsion is the pure binder it can be mixed with casein paints to improve the brushability or flow without altering any other characteristics. When using casein paints for very thin washes, mix one part Casein Emulsion with five parts water to ensure color brilliance and to maintain adhesion and integrity of the paint film.   Richeson Mediums are tested in accordance to: ASTM D-4236 and bear safety labels to the standards issued by ACMI. While some Richeson mediums are AP approved non-toxic, certain mediums bear the CL label with safety warnings.

Schmincke Kasein-Bindemittel (50088) 500ml
Product information "Schmincke casein binder (50088) 500ml" Casein binder dries water-soluble 50088 Binding agent for self-grinding casein paints and casein tempera. Water-dilutable, smudge-proof, but not waterproof when dry. Processing instructions Shake before use. The standard casein tempera binder is a mixture of casein binder (50088) with linseed oil stand oil (50005) in a ratio of 10:1 (by volume). For an oil-rich casein tempera, the ratio of casein binder to linseed oil stand oil can be increased to a maximum of 10:3 (by volume). A casein tempera with less oil can be obtained by adding 1 part resin solution to 10 parts of the standard casein tempera binder (by volume). Suitable resin solutions are, for example, 1:3 mixtures of Venetian turpentine resin (50073) or dammar in pieces (50093) in turpentine oil (50024 / 50102) (by weight). The mixing ratio of binder to pigment depends heavily on the type of colorant. Our recommendation: start with equal parts binder and pigment, then add binder or pigment until the desired consistency is achieved. The dried paint application should have a smooth surface and not rub off when rubbed with the dry ball of the hand. The paint mixtures rubbed with such a casein tempera binder can be diluted with three times the amount of water if necessary. Tempera binders and paints rubbed with them are intended for immediate use and should only be kept for a few days in a closed container, even if stored in a cool place. Clean tools immediately after use with water or water and soap. Close containers immediately after use. Store in a cool, dry place. The pure casein binder can be frozen to increase its shelf life – preferably in portions – and thawed as needed. Individual preliminary tests are recommended. Container sizes: 500 ml Ingredients: lactic acid casein.
