Roman SzmalAquarius WatercolorsAll AQUARIUS watercolors have excellent lightfastness (minimum rating of 7 on the Blue Wool scale), which means that the colors will not fade for at least 100 years (if used correctly). In contrast to other watercolors, the palette of our Aquarius colors consists exclusively of lightfast pigments. For this reason, our products do not contain any non-permanent pigments, such as PG8, PR83, PY1 or fluorescent. On the other hand, they contain some unique tones not available anywhere else, like PY61, PY168, PV37, PBr23 or PBk8. We only make small batches of our paints, which allows us to maintain an exceptional quality of our paints. Each batch is tested for its performance characteristics: vibrancy, flowability, viscosity, color value, transparency, grain, undertone, color strength, clarity and particle size. For each color we choose the perfect cut that matches the particle size and is optimal for the color's performance. We currently manufacture 180 colours, 154 are mono-pigment colours. Such a wide range of mono-pigment colors allows artists to mix them and create their own high-quality color palettes. Our 34 EARTH SHADES are made from natural earth, not synthetic iron oxides. With colors such as Aquarius Black, Mummy Transparent Red, Hämatite, Van Dyck Brown or Caput Mortuum, we give the artist even more choice. Some unique shades are created exclusively by ROMAN SZMAL ART, such as: B. Aquarius Green, Przybysz's Grey, Ocean Blue, Shadow Violet, Green Gold and Olive Green. We use only the highest quality ingredients: pharmaceutical grade gum arabic and glicerine, linden honey, distilled water and pure pigments. We only buy from suppliers with a good reputation. Each pan of AQUARIUS colors is filled and labeled by hand. The labels of our watercolors are made of hand-painted watercolor paper and provide information about lightfastness, grain, transparency and the degree of penetration into paper.

Today as in 1993, the DANIEL SMITH Watercolors are “formulated to meet and exceed the highest industry standards for the manufacture of artist’s paints”, and every batch made is tested and analyzed for its performance qualities:
Lightfastness
Color value
Tinting strength
Clarity
Vibrancy
Undertone
Particle size
Density
Viscosity
Daniel Smith is truly the worldwide leader of watercolors for artists with 250+ beautiful colors in the 15ml watercolor tubes, the most of any manufacturer, and 88 of the most popular colors in 5ml watercolor tubes. Many are traditional colors relied upon by all artists, and there are many “truly unique” colors made only by Daniel Smith that have become so important to watercolor artists.
Quinacridone Watercolors, Daniel Smith was the first manufacturer to use the high-performance Quinacridone pigments for artists paints. Quinacridone pigments were developed for the automotive industry which requires extremely lightfast and durable paints. The Quins are known for their brilliant color and for their luminous transparency which make them wonderful for watercolors.
PrimaTek Watercolors are made from minerals, often semi precious minerals, that have been ground into pigments, mixed with gum arabic (the binder) and milled into PrimaTek Watercolors. The first was Lapis Lazuli Genuine in 1998, since then, many more have been added such as Amethyst Genuine, Piemontite Genuine and Serpentine Genuine. Most of these colors have wonderful granulating effects that some artists have called “magical”.
Luminescent Watercolors have special optical effects perfect for subjects that have a sparkle, sheen, or reflective glow like the iridescence of hummingbird feathers or the sheen of metals.
Cadmium Hues, Daniel Smith has developed safe and vibrant Cadmium Hues with the density and richness of cadmium colors without the cadmium pigment. Virtually identical in color to their namesakes, they are cleaner in mixtures and much stronger in tints. The working properties – staining power, semi-transparency and excellent lightfastness – are nearly identical to those of the low-soluble cadmium colors Daniel Smith previously manufactured.

WATERCOLORS:
M. Graham watercolors are created with exceptional amounts of pigment in a time-honored binding medium of pure gum arabic, glycerine and natural blackberry honey.
Why Honey
As an essential ingredient in our binding medium, honey contributes to moistness for smooth, easily controlled applications, increased pigment concentrations, and freedom from over reliance on preservatives. Because of the honey medium, our watercolor resists hardening on the palette, or in the tube. It dilutes easily, often after months of disuse.
You will only find this historic special shade in Schmincke's Retro-Line. The original cochineal red is a transparent, deep shade of red that is obtained from cochineal scale insects and was once an important color in watercolor painting.

In the Jubilee Year 2017, Schmincke enlarges and optimizes - after some years of research by the Schmincke lab - the HORADAM® watercolours to the premium 140 assortment. The capabilities of newest pigments, the inclusion of customer wishes and market analysis, as well as changes in the raw material market gave us the impulse to perfect the assortment and to extend the colour range.
35 new colours, among these 32 one-pigment-tones, fill the harmonic colour spectrum of the HORADAM® premium assortment. The increased use of highly lightfast pigments, such as Quinacridone and Perylene, offers completely new possibilities for the artist. 10 new red colours, 3 new one-pigment violet colours, 4 new black tones and 8 new brown colours, partly transparent like e.g. Transparent Ochre or Transparent Umber, have been added to the premium assortment. The ultramarine range has been enlarged with the famous colour French Ultramarine.
100 well-tried and traditional colours as well as Oxgall – the wetting agent - already fit to the highest quality standards, so that there was no need for a change. 4 colours (with remaining shades) have been optimized using the newest and best raw materials. 6 colours are omitted due to raw materials which aren’t available anymore.
Unique pigments – new colours – completed coloristic
Quinacridones: These highly lightfast pigments are used to complete the quinacridone range from 6 to 9 tones, visible in the name, e.g. Quinacridone red light.
Perylenes: Using completely new, highly lightfast perylene pigments this range is enlarged; 3 new colours (Perylene green, Perylene red deep, Perylene violet).
Ultramarine: This range gets with the French Ultramarine a much asked for one-pigment colour, a reddish, intense and granulating blue, coloristically situated between the three already existing ultramarines.
Transparent iron oxides: The 3 new transparent colours Transparent Ochre, Transparent Sienna as well as Transparent Umber complete the spectrum of opaque brown colours. These transparent colours are rare due to the very hard and difficult to process consistency with these pigments.
Brilliant tones: The existing brilliant colours have been optimized due to changing on the raw material market. The new pigments have nearly the same coloristic, but a better quality. The new brilliant tone Brilliant Opera Rose, especially for painting flowers, has been added. All brilliant colours now contain a mixture of fluorescent and highly lightfast pigments. Due to the influence of light on the fluorescent components of the colours, the brilliant tones do not have an evaluation of lightfastness.
Black/Grey: 3 new colours – Graphite Grey, Hematite Black and Mars Black enlarge the spectrum.
Potters Pink: This worldwide well-known colour, containing the special pigment PR 233, has been added to the assortment, too.
