Diane Townsend Artist's Pastels
Diane Townsend Artists’ Pastels are made from the purest pigments available to artists. Her emphasis is on maintaining the depth and clarity of each color, and allowing the character and texture of each pigment to be expressed. The pastels are entirely made by hand from the mixing of pigments to shaping the pastels to labeling and packaging, resulting in a fine drawing and painting tool. Her pastels are not combined with base of chalks, fillers or cheaper pigments, which can create uniformity in shape and texture, but which are lacking in richness and density. Townsend pastels do not build up a gray chalky film, therefore artists can rework their paintings without losing clarity.
Soft Form Pastels
The Townsend palette uses classical artist’s colors and an exotic and vivid range of modern pigments. The soft form pastels offer a specialty range of dark hues and off-blacks known for their softness and clarity, and a light range for excellent opacity and covering power. Many of the grays and mauves are mixed from complimentary colors with Light (L) and Dark (D) shades for a total of 360 colors. There are also 48 exotic colors in pearlescent, iridescent, metallic and fluorescent colors not represented here, for a total of 408 colors in all.
Diane Townsend about her Soft Form Pastels:
"The soft form palette contains both classical artists’ colors such as raw umber, ultramarine blue and cadmium red, and an exotic and vivid range of modern pigments such as naphthol red and the fluorescent pigments. I start with the pure shade of each color, of which there are about 35 different pigments that I use, and I create mixes based on the pigments that work well together and look beautiful for artists today. You will find a Viridian hue(using Phthalo Green and a blue) and Alizarin hues (using Quinacridone magenta) reminiscent of Tintaretto and pale earth tones and greens based on Morandi’s paintings. I created the off blacks based on 19th century Navaho blankets and the off whites as one might see in Robert Ryman’s paintings. I worked as a figurative painter for 25 years and I developed colors hard to find in commercial pastels, in particular delicate pale tones observable on the surface of water or glass or skin color and the very dark tones to contrast the light. When I moved into abstract painting my attitude towards color became one of ” the simpler the better”."
Soft Form pastels are approx. 1 3/4″ long and 3/4″ thick
At Peters Art you will find 15 different sets of soft form pastels. More information about the individual sets can be found here.

Terrages Pastels
Terrages pastels are recommended for artists who wish to open the surface of the paper and work the pigment into it. Terrages is made by adding pumice stone to give the paper ‘tooth’ on which to layer color. Terrages pastels are made in size and shape that can accept a more forceful application without crumbling. Terrages is available in 190 colors.
Terrages Pastels are larger pastels containing crushed pumice stone which enables the artist to open up the surface of paper and work in more color. The added pumice will also help create complex layers of color and a luminous sensation of depth and space. Terrages pastels are made in a size and shape that can accept a more forceful application without crumbling.
Each color of Terrages pastels is available in several shades.
Terrages, approx. 1 and 1/2″ long and 1″ across , and 6/8″ thick.
At Peters Art you will find 13 different sets of Terrages. More information about the individual sets can be found here.
Pastels – finest, extra-soft artists’ pastels, series 17
Pastel painting has enjoyed great popularity for centuries, uniting drawing techniques with an intense colour effect. The extra-fine pastels by Schmincke are as soft as velvet and silk with a particularly soft and intense colour application as a result of their formulation and the traditional production technique. The colour spectrum of 400 shades allows limitless artistic possibilities, whether used in their pure form on specialist pastel paper, in mixed-media techniques or also - on the special Schmincke primers - on canvas. A professional range of fixatives ensures that the observer can also enjoy the unique results over a long period.
Each stick is handmade individually – colours that are as soft as velvet and silk
400 brilliant and rich colours
Exceptionally strong colour application
Best, highly concentrated artists’ pigments
Minimum binder content
Maximum lightfastness
Unique colour mixtures and special colours
Brilliant colours as soft as silk and satin
Working with Schmincke pastels leads you back to the origin of colour. Our round sticks consists only of the finest artists’ pigments (without chalk!) and a minimum amount of binder. The binder content is so small that the medium-find ground pigments only just achieve a stable bond.
Traditionally crafted pastels
The unusual formulation, which guarantees a unique strong colour application, also requires an equally unique production process: Traditional Craftsmanship. In this traditional and time-consuming process, screw presses are used first to shape the pre-kneaded dough into round strands, which are then removed by hand and cut into the right length in wire-strung frames. The sticks are still damp and are left to dry in the air for 8 days before they are labelled by hand.
It is not possible to produce our pastels using machines because of the particularly fine formulation - the expensive sticks could break. The guaranteed consistency of quality and softness across all production cycles is crucial, which means that artists know that the colour will always have the same quality.
Unlimited variety of colour
The complete range includes 400 colour shades, divided into 75 colours which each have 5 grades: In addition to the pure colour (D), there is a black graduation (B) and 3 grades of white graduations (H, M, O). The balanced range is supplemented by a 10-step neutral grey series, 5 dark shades, gold, silver, 2 black shades, white and 5 special pearlescent shades for specific effects. This variety of colours is another sign of quality of the finest, extra-soft pastels by Schmincke.
Pastels should only be sprayed with specific fixatives (such as the Schmincke pastel fixative No. 50402) - used sparingly.
