The Alpha series has a rough surface, is 150g/m² in weight and natural white. It is suitable for dry media, light washes, pen and ink.

Stillman & Birn meets these diverse artist needs with sketchbooks that contain robust, high-performance art papers.
Only Stillman & Birn offers a sketchbook system that allows artists to choose the paper weight, shade and surface type that best suits their specific techniques. With both internal and surface sizing, our papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Much like paper size delays water absorption, the pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably vibrant color!
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally robust. Our hardbound bindings - which are stiff when new - are designed to break in. The spines retract and then lie completely flat, allowing for both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.
Our sketchbook system in the USA offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:
• Medium Grit - pronounced tooth suitable for all dry media and can also accommodate multiple washes
• Cold Press - Substantial tooth, improved wet and tear strength, suitable for mixed media artwork
• Smooth - Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors
